The Prickly Pear Plant, Fruit and Beveridge

I have great memories of a trip that we took to Colorado a few years ago.  My husband’s family lives out there, and we try to make the 2000 mile drive, if we don’t fly, as often as we can.  We do enjoy driving trips.  There are many Prickly Pear plants out west, and we were at a spot where it seemed okay to take a part of a plant to bring home and try to grow.

I later learned that the pads of the plant are edible, and that the fruit of the plant contains many antioxidants which has lead to the making of delicious health drinks like Nopalea. Those that drink these health drinks say that it helps to reduce inflammation in the body, and that science has proved this to be a fact. This all sounds good, and I’m considering trying the free offer made by Nopalea as a way to improve my health in the new year since the source has been around for long enough to be trusted.

I remember years ago receiving a jar of home-made jelly made from the fruit of the Prickly Pear plant, it was quite delicious, but this was long before the health benefits of the fruit were known.

As for the piece of the plant that I brought back, my husband completely changed my plan by telling me that if you just let the pad sit out on a dish, not in soil, it will draw moisture from the air and grow. He was right, the plant did just that, as our climate in the northeast is much more humid than out west.

Well, I’m off to visit the Nopalea Facebook page to check out the special and see if this might be a health drink that I can sample to ring in the New Year!
